3. Push — Sapphire This one is heavy. It is not easy to read. But it is one of the most important books written about a young Black woman finding her voice through impossible circumstances. Read it slowly. It deserves that.

4. The Hate U Give — Angie Thomas Some people sleep on this one because of the YA label. Do not sleep on this one. The writing is sharp, the story is real, and Starr Carter is a character that will stay with you long after the last page. https://amzn.to/4s6vhlW

5. The Kingdom Prison Wife — Cherry Sha'Ron I would be doing you a disservice if I left my own book off this list. Paris Holloway belongs on every urban fiction reader's shelf.
